I am Wilma-Emilia Kuosa, a dance artist born in Helsinki, Finland. Currently based in my second home, Nice, France, where I did my professional training at the OFFJAZZ DANCE CENTER. I have had the privilege to work with Matt Mattox’s apprentice, Maestro Gianin Loringett. He is the most important teacher in my development. In addition, I have spent time at the Pineapple Dance studios in London, SEAD in Salzburg, Dance station in München and Studio Harmonic in Paris. I have also had the pleasure of taking classes around the world with the Pina Bausch Company, Tero Saarinen Company, Virgilio Sieni, Alexander Ekman, Sonya Lindfors, Jean-Christophe Maillot Co., Reija Wäre, Marco Goecke, Val Suarez, Cecilia Marta, Huques Salgas, Ima Iduozee, Gildas Diquero, Michael Owens and Tarja Rinne.
As a performer I am always ready to completely surrender myself to the creation. Rhythm is life for me not only as the soul of the movement but also while singing or acting. I have a versatile background in the performing arts and love new challenges that find my way. I thrive in being a chameleon to become the required role in front of the audience. Channeling energy is my strongest point as a performer while embracing the dynamics of the work of art.
As teacher and choreographer I am looking forward to developing jazz dance workshops around the globe and creating new choreography for junior and professional dance schools and companies. My method is based on bringing people together within the tradition of practicing jazz dance. I live for rhythm and share this passion by taking my students on a journey to utilize their bodies as if they were instruments – it’s about the harmony of the melody that the body can perform.
My choreography is based on the communication between the group of dancers involved. While introducing my personally developed style of lyrical jazz I want to feed the dancers with material to inspire their creativity. My improvisation tools enable the dancers to express themselves freely while honoring the tradition of my own foundation – the Mattox technique.
I have been teaching dance for over a decade and am the artistic director of the awarded jazz dance collectives that I have founded – RAW and JazzAttack. I am a proud member of the Finnish DragQueen scene as choreographer to the stars and my work has been broadcasted on national television. I am the co-founder and creator of the concept for the JAZZ&DANCE improvisation club for Koko Jazz Club and KokoTheater. Currently I am working on my second piece the Geisha dance concert concept which includes a photo exhibition featuring body painting illustrating the position of women in today’s society. The Geisha photo exhibition is already touring on its own in galleries with opening night demo performances of the upcoming spectacle. Everywhere I go I want to share the melody of hope with my body as my instrument. In all of my creations I want to speak up for humanity. I sincerely welcome you all to participate in the #DANCEYOURHEARTOUTSESSIONS
